Physiotherapist in Antalya: Definition, History and Fields of Practice
Movement is the basis of life. In moments when physical functions are lost or pain reduces the quality of life, physiotherapists are among the most important healthcare professionals who step in. So, who exactly is a physiotherapist? What are their legal rights, and in which areas do they serve? In this article, we will examine the details of the profession and its status in Turkey.
What is a Physiotherapist? What Do They Do?
A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional who works to eliminate functional losses resulting from movement system disorders, injuries, illnesses, congenital disabilities, or aging, and to enable individuals to reach their maximum movement capability.
In case of illness, physiotherapists plan and implement customized physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs following a specialist doctor's diagnosis. They also design preventive exercise programs for healthy individuals to protect against diseases and improve overall health.
What are the Sub-disciplines of Physiotherapy?

History of Physiotherapy in Turkey
In the modern sense, physiotherapy in the world developed with the rehabilitation needs of wounded soldiers during World Wars I and II. In Turkey, the foundations of this profession were laid in 1961.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı, the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation was established under Hacettepe University, and the first physiotherapist education in Turkey began. Since then, the profession has become an indispensable part of the healthcare system through an increasing number of universities and scientific studies.
Legal Regulations, Authority, and Working Opportunities
The authorities and responsibilities of physiotherapists in Turkey are guaranteed under the Law No. 1219 on the Practice of Tababet and branches of Health Arts and the Ministry of Health's Regulation on Job and Task Descriptions of Health Professionals.
- Authority: According to the regulation, physiotherapists plan and implement appropriate physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs for patients based on the medical diagnosis made by a specialist doctor. For healthy individuals, they have the authority to independently apply health-protecting and improving physiotherapy (clinical pilates, posture correction, etc.) without the need for a doctor's diagnosis.
- Practice Areas: State hospitals, training and research hospitals, private hospitals, medical centers, private education and rehabilitation centers, sports clubs, nursing homes, thermal and spa facilities, and healthy living centers are the main fields of work.
- Opening a Clinic: Physiotherapists can independently practice their profession by opening a "Healthy Living Center" or physiotherapy consultancy clinic in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Health.

A physiotherapist is a healthcare professional with a 4-year university degree, authorized by the Ministry of Health. Massage is only a small part of the methods they apply; their practice encompasses a wide area including manual therapy, clinical exercise, and electrotherapy.
In Turkey, starting with a medical diagnosis and referral from a specialist doctor is essential for a safe and effective process.
SGK covers treatment programs dependent on a doctor's report in state and contracted private hospitals under specific conditions. Services provided in private clinics or practice settings are generally outside the scope of SGK. The coverage depends on the doctor's report, diagnosis code, and regulatory conditions; checking with the health institution and SGK is recommended.
